Here goes...

My first vid attempt. Inspired by the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] marenfic and facilitated by the Great Ice Storm of 2007 last week (where I had 4 days of no school or work to sit around and play with iMovie).

A Kara Thrace fanvid to "Only" by Nine Inch Nails
Author: jcathm, but you can call me Julia
Summary: Kara is my ultimate muse for angst and pretty.
Spoilers: Up through 3.11 Eye of Jupiter.
Disclaimer: Don't own the images or the music--they are just very fun to play with.

But I realize YouTube is much more interoperable...

NINE INCH NAILS LYRICS: "Only"

I'm becoming less defined as days go by
Fading away
And well you might say
I'm losing focus
Kinda drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself

Sometimes I think I can see right through myself [x2]
Sometimes I can see right through myself

Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is
Cause it doesn't really matter anymore
(no it doesn't really matter anymore)
No it doesn't really matter anymore
None of this really matters anymore

Yes I am alone but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because
Because you were never really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself

[x2]
I just made you up to hurt myself, yeah
And I just made you up to hurt myself

And it worked.
Yes it did!

[Chorus:]
There is no you
There is only me
There is no you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me

Only [x4]

Well the tiniest little dot caught my eye and it turned out to be a scab
And I had this funny feeling like I just knew it's something bad
I just couldn't leave it alone, I kept picking at the scab
It was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through

Now I am somewhere I am not supposed to be, and I can see things I know I really shouldn't see
And now I know why, now, now, now I know why
Things aren't as pretty
On the inside

[Chorus]

Only [x8]

WHEE! That is awesome. It is everything I imagined and more ;) You did a great job with the clips and the flow and this is the perfect Kara song.

I will save this and watch it over and over.

awesome!!!

I'm such a Kara-holic and you're totally feeding my addiction.

This vid was deliciously dark and you showed just how truly frakked up (and hawt) Kara really is. The song was a great match for her, too!

This vid is frakking awesome! I loved the song. I loved the clips! I will totally admit that this is the first vid I watched that wasn't all about nekkid pilots. Kara rocks and so do you :D

Hehe, I'll have to do a nekkid vid soon then :)

After the Joan-Jett/Pilots-are-crazy-badasses one...

Awesome! I've been meaning to come back and watch this vid. Yay! I really enjoyed it--interesting take on where Kara's at these days. That lyric 'I made you up just to hurt myself' is so brilliant for her! I liked the way you explored so many aspects of her life rather than concentrating on one central relationship. And I really liked that you included the Farm imagery too. And of course the Leoben/Kasey stuff.

I'm dling the pretty version, for sure!

Thank you so much! I really love this song for Kara too. She's had such a fabulous character arc of disillusionment and angst this season, and I really wanted to focus on that. So glad you liked it enough to download it :)

It is, it is, it is! I get a real kick out of it and find it very addictive, though I've been mopey about it recently--but I'm fighting my way out of that.

Ohnoes! Mopey for lack of inspiration, or mopey because of frustration with the mechanics of vidding? Don't despair, Boppy!

didn't you just make one recently? I haven't seen FNL, but I love Dido--I'll have to watch it today :)

Um, neither of those reasons for mopey. *sheepish* Mopey because I got (very) negative beta feedback on my first Clex vid. It's been shelved and I was seriously so distressed--I'd overinvested in that particular vid--that I couldn't vid for ages, but I've freed myself up again with the FNL one. So my advice is... be gentle with yourself. I was on such a high about vidding I didn't even realise there was a massive hole around the corner waiting for me to fall in it. You may not be prey to it, but just in case... be gentle!! *g*

I'm really impressed with how much you drew on for this vid--I've found that hard so far--my only two posted vids have very contained subject matter for a reason!

I completely sympathize! I got some pretty harsh feedback in one of my other fandoms and it took a while to bounce back, especially when you are emotionally invested in your creations (which, why would you be making them if you weren't emotionally invested?).

I'm really impressed with how much you drew on for this vid--I've found that hard so far--my only two posted vids have very contained subject matter for a reason!

That's really fascinating to me because, as of now, I have the exact opposite problem. Maybe I feel like keeping the vid to a contained subject area requires more control and subtlety than I have as a vidder right now? (or maybe I just love Kara so much that it's hard to not show a huge range of her awesomeness...)

I have an idea for my next vid that is going to require a lot more precision in my clip arrangement and storytelling because the song I want to use is about 40% lyrics and 60% instrumental. Not quite sure if I can pull it off the way I want it just yet, we'll see.

which, why would you be making them if you weren't emotionally invested?
Exactly!! I'm sorry you received harsh feedback. Now I know what that is like! I think I'm reasonably gentle in my betaing anyway, but it definitely gave me new insight into the need to treat creators tenderly! It's fabulous that you've bounced back.

It's so interesting that we have opposite problems! As soon as I tried a big-scale vid, using footage across five seasons, it all felt out of my control. It may partly have been song choice--the song in question has a very marked change of pace halfway through AND it was a comedy vid. Really, I don't know why I didn't realise it was going to be hard to pull off!

I think I also didn't cope well with vidding characters I was very invested in, ironically. My other two vids have been of Tyra (who I like but not obsessively) and Kara/Leoben (who, again, I like, but they are not my primary viewing interest in BSG). Weird, huh?! I'm terrified to vid Lee, for example, because if I got it 'wrong' I don't think I could live with myself, and the same with the Clex.

60% instrumental sounds daunting! But I love instrumental work and hopefully you'll find that you can do interesting new things with it--instrumentals can be useful for pushing the storytelling along, for sure. Good luck with it!
