BSG 4.17 - Someone to Watch Over Me

Thinky thoughts about Kara, the show's mythology and other flailing over this way...
Kara/piano!man/Hera:
This was somewhat slow-paced for a Kara-centric episode, but that kinda makes sense given her 'otherness' and identity confusion throughout S4. They really emphasized the repetitiveness of both where the fleet is and where she is in her life with that scene at the beginning as CAG, and then they reinforced that when head!piano-man was telling her it was okay to just be lost sometimes. Being in limbo is kind of hard to watch, let alone process. But Katee can ACT THE FUCK out of anything, even bewildered/subdued/confused like Kara is right now. As always, I love my girl and I am totally along for the ride.
I really kind of love the mindfrak of having dreamt/imagined her father re-teaching/reconnecting her to The Song that ties everything together.
I guess I'm going to keep guessing Kara-as-hybrid then? And that's the Kara/Hera connection? Or is Hera still the only hybrid-by-birth and Kara is still just an unanswered anomaly who sees things and makes connections? Maybe Hera's drawing ARE stars, in addition to notes, and Kara will be able to find the way to their new home with them? Maybe her father was actually a Lord of Kobol (not a cylon) and Kara is a demigod? That would tie in with the Aurora stuff nicely :)
Also, I'm really okay with the Kara/Sam sickbay moments. I wish Sam would get to WAKE UP already, but I'm totally okay with Kara being there for several reasons: 1) loving Sam in her own way and wanting to make sure he's okay (y'all already know I multi-ship Kara because I think she DOES love both Lee and Sam--and Zak for that matter--in different, emotionally complex ways), and 2) because she thinks Sam might have answers for her and she NEEDS him to help explain her to herself. I love that she was playing her father's music for him!
Boomer/Chief:
I was all choked up and teary during the shared projection with Chief (I totally lost it when he found the room with 'their' kid in it). It's easy to forget how intense the Boomer/Chief romance was early on in the series because it's been so long.
But, like my poor Chiefy Chief--I WAS JUST BEING TRICKED. Not sure whether she was stealing Hera to take him back to Cavil or if it was all just to be a big 'frak you' to the humans and cylons who had screwed her over, but one way or another Roslin called it: Boomer is a master manipulator. And I just crumpled over and died a thousand angsty deaths for the Chief on that closing clip where he runs up to the dream house on Picon to find that Boomer has taken THEIR child too. He is totally frakked.
And jeez louise Athena! First having to listen/watch while Boomer fucked her husband and then the complete enraged impotence of having her child stolen (again!). Athena is deserves some pretty severe vengeance after all that.
Misc:
Enough of Adama and his ship falling apart! It's quite anvillacious at this point. I understand that Galactica the ship will probably not survive the series, and that's actually a really cool idea, but I don't need Adama staring mournfully at the walls fifty gajillion times.
Where is my Lee? I would love to see some decisive/action!Lee in the next three eps :)
What is happening with Gaius and his GUNS?
It kind of got blipped over but we now have a cylon Quorom member, Sonja. WOW!
Now that we have so much backstory on Ellen and the final five, and we've seen the fallibility of Ellen as the creator of the cylon models...it seems like there has to got to be some other, BIGGER higher power orchestrating the connectivity here. Who/what is putting the song in everyone's head and showing them visions of the opera house and pathways to planets? Is there One God, is it the Lords of Kobol--what is the next level up from the Final Five going to be in the final BSG cosmology? I am seriously on the edge of my seat about this part.
Answers would be nice! My Sam needs to wake up and explain a whole lotta shit. I can ride out the Lost-like whatthefrakkery for now but I'm going to need goooood answers soon.
And as I was telling
wisteria_, I have always like the show for the character arcs AND the mythology AND the omgawesome space battles, so I'm more than happy to spend an hour snuggled up in Kara's and the Chief's worlds when I'm mostly certain that the next few episodes are going to be RDM's intense and mind-blowing series finale.

Date: 2009-03-02 04:58 am (UTC)Everything you said here about Kara and Chief I was thinking on Friday! And damn it but Sam does need to wake the frak up and explain shit to me because every week I feel like I missing some intricate connection. I loved that the song her Dad taught Kara was The SONG.... I loved it!
I know that with only like 3 episodes left the writers must be starting to tie things together and giving us more details but I was annoyed on Friday because even though I know the info must be starting to trickle into the episodes I can't put much together yet.
Maybe because it's been so long since I've seen the first 2 seasons or maybe it's because I've only seen all 4 seasons a couple times but I feel like I'm missing something but can figure it out.
And Dude, where was Lee the last few episodes. It's like he's never around much anymore. I realize it's an ensemble show and they gotta wrap up everyone's storylines but come give him something to do...
Anyhow, later hun...

Date: 2009-03-02 02:26 pm (UTC)I know there are only three episodes left but then I think of the last two season finales and HOW MUCH insane amounts of awesome exposition, change/revelation and action were in those one or two episoes and I think it will be okay.
There has been kind of a weird flip-flopping between the really intense episodes that move the shows mythology along in huge jumps, and the slower more emotional character episodes. But like I said, I like BOTH the mythology and the characters of the show so that is cool by me :)
I love my depressing show
Date: 2009-03-02 05:05 am (UTC)I mean, I have to admire the show for letting me hate Laura (whom I love) so much during her scene with Tyrol and then having her be completely correct. Except... no, maybe there was no way at all to persuade Tyrol that it was OK to just hand her over to be executed. And Laura's patience has grown shorter with her life.
But man is that depressing. And what the hell did Galen Tyrol ever do to deserve this? Also, Cavil has so much less reason to be pissed off at Ellen and the Five than the Eights do. Imagine coming face to face with the people who apparently designed you to fall in love like falling on a knife. (Anyway, who says the Five knew how to design, say, optics that could watch a supernova *and* make the experience as sensual as The Swirl? Cavil doesn't just want to detect the amplitude of light at various wavelengths, he wants it to feel totally cool. The Hybrids may have something like that, but it ought to make Cavil think twice about the fact that they're all insane.
Re: I love my depressing show
Date: 2009-03-02 05:32 am (UTC)HA! That's so true.
Re: I love my depressing show
Date: 2009-03-02 02:30 pm (UTC)BSG puts us all through the ringer so much that the most heartbreaking moments can be beautiful and uplifting!
On the one hand, I don't think Galen deserves this kind of betrayal AT ALL. The poor guy has been in love with this woman for forever and she dangles a gorgeous vision of love and domestic bliss in front of him. BUT. He was willing to just kill a random Eight and lie/sneak to get her off the ship, so he's not exactly 100% innocent either.
I'm really curious about ship-hybrids now after seeing the preview. Maybe we'll get more insight into why they were created and what they mean?

Date: 2009-03-02 05:30 am (UTC)Boomer is a master manipulator.
Am I the only one kind of pissed off about this? I still don't get what Roslin was talking about -- I don't remember Boomer ever before "preying on emotions" or manipulating anyone the way Athena did. (And I love Athena like crazy, and I fully support her getting stabby on the whole world for what happened to her in this ep, but SHE WAS THE SHARON WHO LIED AND MANIPULATED PEOPLE. Boomer was the puppet Sharon who never knew what she was doing and got frakked over by the universe, at least in the time Adama/Roslin knew her.)
I just think it's weird they're retconning her as this always-manipulative bitch and not the walking tragedy we saw in season one. Honestly, Adama and Roslin had *no reason* to be mad at Boomer while they're forgiving and trusting the rebels left and right. But now her evilness in this episode made their attitude look justified. [/rant]
It kind of got blipped over but we now have a cylon Quorom member, Sonja. WOW!
The blip was all I needed to completely freak out. OF COURSE IT'S ONE OF MY GIRLS. <3 Awesome. I loved Lee being all diplomatic with her too.

Dude, you're totally right! I have to admit to completely conflating the two because of the way Roslin phrased it. Maybe the writers were trying to say that that's what the Eight model does, manipulate feelings? But even then that wouldn't be relevant to the original Boomer because she was seriously fucked over in S1. Maybe they're arguing that her experiences with rejection by humans on New Caprica--and her subsequent falling in with Cavil which I still HATE--are now the guiding force in her motivation?
Your ranting is totally justified the more I think about it!

Date: 2009-03-02 06:55 pm (UTC)I guess it's not that I have a problem with Boomer being the Bad Sharon Now (although I also would've believed in her redemption a couple of weeks ago) and I could believe her doing all these things. I just also thought it was sad nobody was willing to give her a second chance.

Date: 2009-03-02 06:10 pm (UTC)I'm thinking now that head!characters are projections from models of the type being projected, i.e. a Six is projecting into Gauis. But then again that doesn't explain how Gauis projected into Six.
I've wondered before if Gauis and Kara are siblings. NO I do not want that to happen but they seem to have parallels through the whole story.

Date: 2009-03-02 06:07 pm (UTC)What happened with the cylons leaving Galactica anyway?
I'm still thinking Kara is actually the first hybrid as well with Daniel as her father. I love the idea that she ends up being the first hybrid. Which begs the question do hybrids download and if so, how? When I saw the pic that Hera "Whatever happened to Baby Jane" Agathon did, I immediately thought it was a star map. I didn't even make a connection to musical notes.
It's getting so good! I can't believe it's almost over. *sniff*

Date: 2009-03-03 11:19 am (UTC)*hee* Kara answered that herself way back in season one "call me god."
I'm with you on everything. I actually got choked up for Chief/Boomer and Chief running through the empty house. My heart broke for the Agathons! Katee totally did act the crap out of all her scenes *snugs her* and I'm with you on the chilling and enjoying the Kara/Sam scenes. We've been enjoying the benefits of multi-shipping for a while now. It gives you so much more to enjoy and twice the pretty.
I like your idea about Hera's music actually being a star map. Quite cool.
