The awesome things:
#1. Reunions! The hugs and the attempts to kill/exorcise Dean and the woobie factor
#2. Stealth!Ruby's snark "So. Are you two, like...together?" : HAHAHAHA!
#3. Sam giving Dean back his amulet=AWWWWWWW
#4. Dean snarking about the ipod in the impala
#5. Dean's 'perky nipples' line
#6. Sam's sooperseekrit psychic skillz and that awesome vomiting exorcism effect
#7. The fucking angel wings in the barn and the voice that shatters and the visage that burns=HELL YEAH
#7a. Shades of Constantine (Hellblazer) AND the Angel Islingston (Neverwhere) yes/yes?
#7b. You don't think you deserve to be saved, do you? *SMISHES MY ANGST!DEAN TO DEATH*
#7c. Castiel=the Angel of Thursday? Really?
Which leads me directly to...The OMG!WAY!AWESOME:
The angel shit. This is a fucking brilliant start for a mythology arc for the season. Angels vs Demons and Brother vs Brother. Going to be fascinating and angsty and made of win.
And I REALLY love that the angel was not some perfect, pure being, but just an incredibly powerful mythological creature who is far removed enough from humanity to be almost amoral in his quest. He certainly didn't angst over the people who died because they didn't hear his warnings. Like I said: Constantine and/or Angel Islington or some other awesome anti-hero tie-in.
The Less Than Awesome:
#1. This Ruby is not as good as Katie Cassidy AT ALL. Where's my snark? Where's my sass?
#2, #3, and #4. Maybe I was just really expecting it this time because of all the post-S3 discussion about the show's increase in sexism, but the casual misogyny kept getting on my nerves. Sometimes I think Dean's leering is adorable and that the equal opportunity demon-bashing-regardless-of-gender is okay, but not today apparently. Today I got really annoyed that the diner demon chick (hello Seelix from BSG!) played her demon all wimpy and girly, and Dean's smacking her around was just OKAY because she's a demon. Except that it's not okay when they play the victim/aggressor roles along such clearly gendered lines. That's just fucking sexist and dumb.

Still! I'm schizo and I can love/hate my show like no one else. I'm way excited for the boys to be working together but holding things back from each other, and progressing towards being on opposite sides of the light/dark fight. Dean the angel-sanctioned avenger of light and Sam the conflicted dark-side psychic FTMFW!!!!!!! There are few things that I love in this world as much as some yummy, conflicted hero/villain tension. It's why I loved Clex. And I think it could REALLY work for the boys here.
Savior/Antichrist=OTP yes/yes?
LASTLY. Holy shit, this season might actually make me a Dean!girl. I've been a Sam!girl from the beginning and I've always loved Dean but...this may be the first season where I get into Dean's POV as much and/or more than Sam's. WE'LL SEE KRIPKE, WE'LL SEE. Keep this awesome shit up and anything could happen.
My show is back and it's gonna kick sooooooooooo much ass!

Date: 2008-09-19 02:37 pm (UTC)Yeah, I think that's kind of the nature of the boys: you may start out loving one more than the other, but over time they both suck you in completely!
Not that I am complaining...two gorgeous angsty boys is better than one gorgeous angsty boy, yes/yes?

Date: 2008-09-19 03:02 pm (UTC)I hadn't caught up with last season so I'm a little off. Did Ruby switch bodies then? and is there any chance of her retaining the body Lilith used? I'm not liking the new Ruby at all.
I went through the first half of the show thinking that Dean's escape from hell was all a big dream if you will and would end up with him still chained up in hell and being tortured in this way.

Date: 2008-09-20 01:52 am (UTC)I miss Katie Cassidy. Loved her.
Loved Ruby's "are you two together?" I nearly pissed myself laughing so hard.
And I'm massively intrigued by Castiel. I can't wait.

Date: 2008-09-20 05:11 am (UTC)I knew I recognized the demon waitrees chick from somewhere but I couldn't for the life of me place it. Then I read your review and Duh it's Seelix! So yeah I mention that in my review post I made late last night.
