80s nostalgia FTW

I've got a favor to ask of my brilliant and bounteous flist!

My brain got hijacked by an awesome vid bunny a few days ago and I need your help: I would absolutely love it if everyone would comment with their favorite cheesy eighties movie(s), particularly ones that feature absolutely hilariously bad 80's outfits.

I'm talking both the classics (like John Hughes and John Cusack and Ferris Bueller's and Back to the Futures, etc.) and the guilty pleasures (like Teen Witch and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Bill and Ted's). The worse the outfits and hairstyles are, the better for me.

So tell me your faves! Don't be afraid to mention specific characters or scenes. I need your help to make the awesomest nostalgia vid ever :)

Geez, the first thing that comes to mind is that dress that Molly Ringwald's character made for the prom in Pretty in Pink! lol

And lots and lots of polo shirts and boat shoes!

I'll think of some more and repost!

[identity profile] callumvixen.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Footloose! that scene where the car and the truck are zooming down the road and the girl is stretched between both vehicles.... lol...

Fast Times with Judge Reinhold: I shall serve no fries before their time!

Beverly Hills Cop where Eddie Murphy laughs at the guys in the matching Michael Jackson leather suits.

Ferris Bueller St Pattys Day parade scene!

The two Coreys in Lost Boys!

Police Academy, Mannequin, Purple Rain, St Elmos Fire... and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is pure cheese GOLD!

[identity profile] woolly-socks.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I always had a secret thing for Mannequin. Oh and don't forget The Lost Boys. In fact, anything with Corey Haim in it is sure to have some heinously bad shirts and poofy hair.

My first thought was Pretty in Pink - DUCKY!!! his hair and clothes were 80's awesome!

Some Kind of Wonderful, a few of the support characters sport some rad clothing

The Breakfast Club - chock full of 80's goodness

Better off Dead - John Cusack with cotton-buds up his nose!

can't wait to see your vid!! The 80's were awesome (don't laugh)

[personal profile] nebakanezer 2008-01-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I was totally going to say Some Kind of Wonderful! The kiss in the garage! :) and Miss Amanda Jones's miniskirt outfits. Pretty in Pink's prom dress obviously and Sixteen Candles for sure. What about Can't Buy Me Love when McDreamy is on a riding mower wearing a cowboy hat? She's Having a Baby? I'm sure I'll think of some more! I have a 2 cd compilation called 'Awesome 80's' Interested?

[identity profile] millari.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Valley Girl. Hands down most regrettable 80s New Wave outfits.

And well there's also Square Pegs, featuring a baby Sarah Jessica Parker. I think they're out on DVD, aren't they?

[identity profile] alissabobissa.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
So glad to see I'm not the only one with a thing for Some Kind of Wonderful. :D

Definitely Miss Amanda Jones' mini skirt + blue blouse + white tasseled/fringed boots ensemble, or Keith's grease or paint covered looks.

And I have to put in a plug for John Bender in The Breakfast Club. His outfit with the diamond earring at the end is priceless.

If you want cheese you can't do better than Earth Girls are Easy and Once Bitten. Both have unknown Jim Carrey.

Oh, and you can't forget Patrick Dempsey in Can't Buy Me Love, Kieffer Sutherland in Lost Boys and Flashdance.

Ooh, Christina Applegate in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead.

So many terrible outfits, so many terrible movies!

[identity profile] spinkkitty.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
can't buy me love!

u don't get much tackier than white suede fringe.

i sooo wanted to be cindy mancini when i was 12

[identity profile] mlsky.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
What's the Madonna one? Desperately Seeking Susan? Is that the 80s? Everyone's covered the really good ones. What an awesome idea. *cheers*

[identity profile] chrryblssmninja.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Karate Kid's '80's, right? not a favorite, but it would be fun to see.

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
The Pretty in Pink dress will definitely have to be in there :)

Good call with the boat shoes too! I'll try to find some funny awkward dancing scenes that feature bad shoes.

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, Footloose is perfect! There's also that awesome prom scene with the terrible 80s dresses and tuxedoes :)

And wow, your other suggestions are just the kind of thing I was looking for. I hadn't thought of Mannequin yet and there are soooo many awesomely bad outfits in that one!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I used to watch Mannequin semi-religiously at the time; I'll never forget when it finally dawned on me that the super-funny window-dressing sidekick was flamingly gay (there are just some jokes you don't get when you're young and clueless *g*).

The Coreys are definitely perfect for this vid. All that posturing and bad hair FTW!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ducky is totally perfect: he has the bad hair, the bad clothes, everything!

Some Kind of Wonderful is another really good one that I hadn't thought of yet. I seem to recall some terrible outfits on Lea Thompson in that one.

Definitely Breakfast Club and Better Off Dead too: both John Hughes and John Cusack movies are a goldmine of silly 80s-ness!

This is a very affectionately mockin vid, don't worry--I love the 80s way more than I probably should ;)

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooh, Can't Buy Me Love is totally perfect! The blond girl and her popular sidekicks had tons of terrible outfits and hairstyles! *twirls you*

I hadn't thought of She's Having a Baby though, good one. Oh! And what was that other Kevin Bacon rom-com...He Said She Said, that's it!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Total squee for Valley Girl--that one is just perfect!!!

I don't own Square Pegs but I'm sure I could track down a rental copy of it. Great idea :)

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have a huge HUGE place in my heart for all the John Hughes films, and it's probably a tie between Some Kind of Wonderful and Breakfast Club for the top slot. You have the excellent taste darling ;)

*sighs* I really really love the 80s!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Earth Girls Are Easy!!! How did I forget about that one! I love everyone in that movie, especially Jim Carrey and Jeff Goldblum.

Flashdance for sure.

Oh, and the terrible fashion show at the end of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is sooooo perfect! You're brilliant darling :D

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
you were not alone--i really wanted to be cindy mancini too. and the helen hunt character from girls just wanna have fun. i was just dying to be spunky and wear terrible outfits!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, Desperately Seeking Susan AND Who's That Girl both had wonderfully bad outfits! Lots of tacky lace and taffeta skirts!

[identity profile] boom-queen.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Good one! It's been a while since I've seen Karate Kid but I'm sure the kids from the mean gang had some good outfits to poke fun at ;)

[identity profile] nekdlove.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
if only everyone thought so :)

[identity profile] woolly-socks.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Coreys FTW!!!

Oh, also Flashdance and The Secret of My Success. I had such a huge crush on Michael J. Fox when I was eleven.

I'll never forget when it finally dawned on me that the super-funny window-dressing sidekick was flamingly gay (there are just some jokes you don't get when you're young and clueless *g*).

Haha, I bet that was a life-changing moment! I grew up in a queer household, so I didn't really notice when characters were gay. It was just like it didn't occur to me either way, unless they were blatantly snogging someone either of the same sex or different.

ETA: I just joined an 80's comm that's been a lot of fun, in case you're interested. Either way I'd love to pimp your vid there if that's OK with you.

[personal profile] nebakanezer 2008-02-03 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, Ah yes, He Said, She said. I thought I had the soundtrack to that too but I can't find it. I'm feeling a need to flashback to high school and watch some classic John Hughes. ;) Oh wait, what about the John Cusack one with Demi Moore where he is a cartoonist and they need to raise money to save a restaurant or something? One Crazy Summer? And Say Anything? But that's '89 so nearly out of the woods on bad outfits. And there was a road trip one with John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga, The Sure Thing. Vision Quest, About Last Night, Heathers, Breakin', Weird Science, Risky Business, Two of a Kind, War Games. C. Thomas Howell and Lori Loughlin in Secret Admirer. Ok wow, did I just reveal entirely too much about myself? LOL
